Society often teaches men to keep their emotions in check and their feelings to themselves. But living such a buttoned-down life can wreak havoc with mental well-being. The following are some top tips to protect your mental health.
- One of the most important ways to stay emotionally strong is to get enough sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for anyone 18 years old or above. Older men tend not to sleep very deeply and may need naps to accumulate the recommended hours of sleep.
- Get moving. Aerobic exercises such as jogging, swimming, cycling, walking or gardening have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression.
- Exercise your mind as often as your muscles. Research suggests that doing a few puzzles each week helps to clear the mind.
- Spend time with friends and family. Share your leisure time with your friends, and make sure to engage with others.
